The External Clinic Unit at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tikrit received two German Shepherd (K-9) cases belonging to the Salahuddin Police Command, as part of the ongoing cooperation between the college and state institutions in providing veterinary and medical services.
The first case involved a dog suffering from blood parasites, accompanied by cardiac enlargement, ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity), and reduced liver enzyme activity. The case was accurately diagnosed, and all necessary examinations were conducted by the Department of Diseases, Poultry, and Fish at the college. Appropriate treatment was administered, and the case was thoroughly documented in the veterinary medical records.
The second case involved another German Shepherd K-9 that arrived deceased. A forensic veterinary necropsy was performed to determine the exact cause of death, and a detailed report, including necropsy findings and laboratory results, was prepared and submitted to the Salahuddin Police Command.
Final-year students participated in the necropsy procedures as part of their practical training in veterinary forensic medicine, enhancing their field experience and supporting hands-on learning in diagnosing complex cases.
These cases highlight the college’s commitment to providing advanced veterinary services and high-level field training, aligning with community needs and supporting state institutions in applied and research-based veterinary medicine.
