Fifth-Year Students at the College of Veterinary Medicine Perform a Splenectomy as Part of Practical Training in Veterinary Surgery

As part of the practical training program in Veterinary Surgery, fifth-year students at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tikrit, carried out a splenectomy (removal of the spleen) procedure in dogs, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Ghazi Atiya at the college’s External Clinic Unit.

The procedure aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in managing clinical cases requiring spleen removal, such as traumatic injuries, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP), certain types of anemia, hematologic malignancies, and splenomegaly (hypersplenism), in addition to treating splenic cysts, abscesses, and tumors.

This training activity reflects the college’s commitment to strengthening the practical and clinical aspects of veterinary education. By engaging students in advanced surgical procedures and complex case management, the program enhances their professional and surgical competencies, preparing them to become skilled veterinarians capable of delivering high-quality medical services and contributing to the advancement of the veterinary sector in Iraq.
